Forbidden Signs: American
Culture and the Campaign Against Sign Language by Douglas Baynton (who teaches history
and American Sign Language), looks at the campaign led by Alexander Graham Bell and other

IADES Fellowship Award Available for Deaf Women Pursuing Doctoral Studies. The International Alumnae of Delta Epsilon Sorority (IADES) has an annual fellowship competition for deaf women in need of financial support for doctoral studies. This $500
fellowship award is intended for tuition costs only, and is awarded on the basis of meeting three criteria:
(1) applicant is a Deaf woman, (2) applicant has completed 12 or more credits in a doctoral program at an accredited institution of higher education, and (3) applicant has a grade point average of 3.0 or better. Previous recipients include Katherine Jankowski and Robbie Carmichael in 1989; Martha Sheridan in 1990; Kathy Woodcock in 1991; Jane Norman in 1992; Judi Fruge in 1993; Valerie Dively in 1994; Dawn Rastetter in 1995; Lisa Colangelo Fischer in 1996; and Lisa Colangelo Fischer in 1997. The deadline for completed applications
is around April, but the scholarship may not be offered each year. More information about the IADES

The American Annals of the Deaf at Gallaudet
University, Washington, DC. A professional journal, the oldest and most widely read in the English
language dealing with deafness and the education of deaf persons, first published in 1847. It is
the official joint publication of The Convention of American Instructors
of the Deaf (CAID) and The Conference of Educational
Administrators of Schools and Programs for the Deaf (CEASD). Once a year a directory edition is
published with names and addresses of organizations and institutions that have deaf-related programs.
This directory is an invaluable reference for anyone interested in deaf education or who is doing research
in this area.

A joint effort of Gallaudet University and Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT)/National Technical Institute for the Deaf (NTID), this is a comprehensive listing of programs available to interested, qualified deaf and hard of hearing students.
