Accomplishments as Professor and Director of Corporate Research, Rutgers University

Rutgers University is the State University for the State of New Jersey. It is a major university with three major campuses, and comprehensive undergraduate and graduate schools, including professional schools of medicine, law, business and management, and all major fields of engineering. It is the result of mergers between many historical colleges, including the original Rutgers College that was descended from Queens College which had been formed by the Dutch Reformed Church, Douglass College for women, Cook College of Agriculture (the seat of the land-grant institution for New Jersey), Livingston College, and several others. Significantly, Rutgers is the largest academic research institution in New Jersey

My assignments

I was hired to head up a new effort to expand Rutgers University's activity in serving the needs of industry. I reported directly to the late President Ed Blaustein, and worked closely with the Office of Contracts and Grants, the Rutgers University Foundation, and the University Patent Committee. My office was known as the Rutgers Office for Corporate and Industrial Research.

I was also asked to represent President Blaustein before the newly created State effort known as the New Jersey Commission on Science and Technology, which was created to further the connections between academia and industry.

Greatly increased the flow of invention disclosures.

As a member of the University Patent Committee, I was able to influence and liberalize the freedoms and opportunities for university faculty and graduate students to develop inventions and license them to industry. The number of annual invention disclosures submitted tripled under my oversight.

Improved relationships with, and funding from industry.

The dollar volume of industry grants and contracts to the University improved by 2-1/2 times during my period of leadership. Many companies signed up to support research that had never worked with the university before.

Helped small start-up businesses obtain financing.

My previous experience on Wall Street proved useful in finding equity capital for several small companies which had been created to exploit university research. One company, in particlar, Enzon, Inc. (NASDAQ ENZN) has now achieved a market capitalization of more than $500 million.
