Description of work at Ametek, Inc.

Ametek, Inc., headquartered in Paoli, PA is a Fortune 500 company. It is primarily a manufacturer of industrial products such as pressure guages, small electric moters, industrial instruments, and fluid processing equipment. It was distinguished as an exceptionally well-managed company that has raised its dividends each year for more successive years (41 years at that time!) than any company listed on the New York Stock Exchange.

Joined the solar energy engineering team at Ametek

The energy crisis was underway during my years at Ametek, and the company had some solutions for making industrial processes more energy efficient. Ametek had enbarked upon a strategy for using thermal flat plate solar collectors with a proprietary selective sunlight-absorbing coating for higher temperature applications than could normally be expected of flat plate collector designs. The strategy was successful and Ametek was the only company that could make high quality flat-plate solar collectors for absorption air-conditioning.

My work was diverse, covering engineering design, testing procedure development, preparing a business plan, marketing and competitive analysis, and sales.

Recognized as a skilled technical writer

One of my major successes was to co-author, with John Bowen, the Ametek Solar Energy Handbook, which became recognized as an industry standard. This book, published by Chilton Publications was produced in an expanded second edition and was distributed to a wide base of industrial engineers who were interested in solar energy

I also had responsibility for some advanced research in photovoltaic cells using thentofore untried materials. Years after leaving Ametek, I was able to direct the laboratory equipment used in some of this research to be donated to the Colorado School of Mines, where it is still being used for cooperative work with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) in Golden, CO.
