Samuel Arnold*; b. Feb. 9, 1765, in Frederick County MD; d. Mar. 3, 1831, in Beaver Run, Hampshire County VA (now WV).

Brief Biography:

Samuel Arnold (1765-1831), is the son of John Arnold (c1726-c1790). Samuel is said to have come from Frederick County MD, and his father John apparently died in Frederick County MD. John's wife, Anna Margaretha Ahlbach, is the daughter of Zachariah Ahlbach and Anna Demuth Schumann of Germany. Anna Margaetha also became known as "Margaret Albaugh" in the family records and the Ahlbach name became Albach, then Albaugh among many of Zachariah's descendants. Zachariah and Anna Demuth Schuman were married on Nov. 9, 1718 in Germany, and emigrated to Philadelphia on the ship Hope on Sept. 23, 1734, with Margaret when she was 6 years old.

Samuel Arnold's father was passed down through the family as "John" Arnold. A search for a Samuel Arnold's (1765-1831) father in Frederick County MD in a Census of that county in 1773 found two persons named John Arnold. One John Arnold was found who was born in 1766-7, to a William and Ann Arnold. Another was born in 1772 to Christopher and Mary Arnold. Both of these are probably of English descent and are a generation too young to have fathered Samuel's birth in 1765. Thus, John was probably not born in Frederick County MD. One record states that he was born in eastern PA, although this may be in reference to a brother of Samuel's, also named John (see the paragraph below).

It is most likely that the John Arnold who fathered Samuel Arnold was a son of Johann George Arnold, born in Epfenbach, Zuzenhausen, located S.W. of Heidelburg Germany in about 1726. In this most likely case, John would have been also born in Zuzenhausen.

John Arnold's will, dated Aug. 25, 1785, is found on pages 357-358 of the Will Book GM-2 for Frederick County MD. John gives his son, Samuel, "one gray horse going on two years" in addition to his equally-divided share of the proceeds of sale of the "balance of real and personal property" to be sold. John's will was read in Court on Oct. 16, 1790, implying that he died before that date.

Samuel Arnold owned a farm in Beaver Run VA (now WV). His daughter, Magdalene Arnold and Peter Fike were married on Samuel Arnold's farm on Mar. 12, 1818.

Samuel Arnold was killed in a buggy wreck on Mar. 29, 1831, when a team of colts ran off with him. He is buried in the Arnold Cemetery, just east of the Mineral County - Hampshire County line in WV. It is on the north side of Rt. 50 on top of a hill, 400 yards from the road. There are two engraved stones marking his grave.
