After graduation she worked for several years at the Dead Letter Office of the U.S. Postal Sevice (USPS) and in its map division where she became an expert topographer. She was one of a group of women who formed a Mission Study Club for the Congregational Church of Washington D.C., and she was member of the Browning Study Club, a literary club. She enjoyed playing tennis and bicycling, and traveled extensively around the US and enjoyed a trip Europe before the end of the 19th century.
On Oct. 7, 1902, she married George Winchester Stone, whom she met on a Mission Study Club picnic. Shortly before the death of their daughter (from cerebral meningitis) in 1909, Mary and George moved to Chevy Chase MD, where they joined the local Presbyterian Church.
Mary was an active participant in many community and charitable organizations. Her activities included serving on the Board of the Montgomery County General Hospital. She joined the local Red Cross, the Chevy Chase Women's Club, and was a Charter Member of the Washington Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA). She entertained and provided hospitality to many international visitors and traveled in Europe and Mexico after her two sons grew to maturity.
She died of an embolism, following an operation for a fatal cancer, of which she was unaware, in 1946.
There is an extensive unpublished biography of Mary (Bradford) Stone, authored by her son, George Winchester Stone, Jr., copies of which are distributed among her descendants and relatives.
