Mary Frazil Thomas*; b. July 16, 1775, Charleston SC; d. ____? Charleston SC (?).

Brief Biography:

Mary Frazil Thomas' father was Etienne Thomas* (1751-1839) , known familiarly as "Stephen", since "Stephen" is the English equivalent of the French, "Etienne". Stephen was born on Aug. 17, 1750 in the "Old Style" calendar (ie. 1751 in the modern calendar) in the Village of Eymet, Department de La Dordogne, France. His family was of the Huguenot (French Protestant) faith and he and his family emigrated with a congregation of Huguenots to London, England, in 1754 under the guidance of a Reverend Bouedillion. One record (a dedication on his tombstone in Charleston SC) states that he was under the care of an older sister, Marie "Mary" Thomas, possibly because their parents had died in France from the effects of Huguenot persecutions. In England, their Huguenot congregation was led by a Rev. Gibert for about 10 years while they prepared to emigrate to America. On Apr. 12, 1764, Etienne was one of about 140 Huguenot exiles aboard the ship "Friendship" arriving in the Port of Charleston SC. The ship's passenger list indicated that he was 12 years old. Many members of the congregation went to the Abbeville District of SC with their Pastor, Rev. Bouedillion. Etienne and his sister, however, settled in Charleston, where they were among the members of that city's first Huguenot Church. The first Huguenot Church of Charleston burned down in the "great fire" of 1796 and Stephen, as he was then known, joined the Presbyterian Church where he became one of the first Ruling Elders of the Second Presbyterian Church which was established in 1810. Stephen died on June 17, 1839, and is remembered by an elaborate inscription on his tomb and by an obituary published in the Charleston Observer of 1839. His sister, "Miss Mary Thomas" died on Oct. 13, 1808 at the age of 80 years, according to the tombstone inscription. Evidently, she was never married, and was born in 1728. Thus, she would have been about 23 years older than Stephen.

Mary Frazil Thomas' mother was Marie Frazil* (1752-1808) , known familiarly as "Mary" was born in St. Palais, France. She and her parents were a part of the same Huguenot congregation that emigrated to Charleston in 1764 on the ship "Friendship", and were part of Rev. Gibert's congregation in London. She married Stephen Thomas* (1751-1839) on May 8, 1774 in Charleston SC. Mary and Stephen had 8 children, all born in Charleston SC: This data is from book: "North Carolina - South Carolina Bible Records" by Jeanwtte Holland Austin family Bible brought by the Frazil and Thomas families from France to Charleston. The Bible is owned by Mrs. Mike Powell of Newnan, GA
