Marler; and had two sons: Edgar Reid Russell, Jr., and William Marler Russell (who also became a medical doctor). After Dr. Edgar Reid Russell died in 1919, his widow , Francis, married second to Powhatan Conway of Danville VA.

He wrote at least 11 biographies of noted individuals including Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, John Paul Jones, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and William the Conquerer. He also wrote The Woman Who Rang the Bell about his great aunt, Cornelia Ann Phillips.

Lucy Plummer Phillips (1862-1963) was a life-long resident of Chapel Hill NC. She became a noted historian of the town and of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC). Under her married name, Lucy Phillips Russell, she wrote A Rare Pattern pub. by the UNC Press, 1957, a history of UNC from a family history perspective.
