Brief Biography:

John Quincy Adams (1735-1826); studied in Paris and Leyden; Secretary to the American Envoy to St. Petersburg, Russia, 1782; Grad. Harvard College A.B., 1787; studied Law under Chief Justice Theophilus Parsons; admitted to MA Bar in 1790, and practiced law in Boston.

He became the U.S. Minister to Holland, Portugal and Prussia; was elected to the MA state senate, 1802; and U.S. Senator from MA, 1803-1808. He was the U.S. Minister to Russia, 1809-1814; Chairman of the U.S. Commission which negotiated the Treaty of Ghent, which closed the War of 1812; Minister to England, 1815-1817; Secretary of State under President Monroe, 1817-1825; and 6th President of the U.S., 1825-1829.

John Quicy Adams served as a member of Congress from MA, 1831-1848, and died of apoplexy on the floor of the House of Representatives in Washington DC on Feb. 23, 1848.
