Notes and Links

Joseph Flory*; b. 1682, probably in Switzerland. New evidence from recent research indicates that he lived in the Alpine Mountains in an area of Aedermannsdorf called Solterschwand. Some older references indicate that he may have been from Freinschein Germany, however, it is now regarded as probable that he among a group of other immigrants from Freinschein aboard the ship Hope, which arrived in Philadelphia on Aug. 28, 1733; d. Oct., 1741, Lancaster County PA.

  • Joseph probably had his first 4 children by his first wife, whose name may have been Catherina, in Switzerland. This is circumstantially probable because of the clustering of the first four children's birth dates, and the name "Hanliey", which is more probably a Swiss name than a German name. Although it is not known when Joseph moved to Germany, however, it would seem probable that it was between the birth of John in 1718 and the birth of Jacob in about 1727. It appears from the ship's passenger list that his second wife emigrated on the ship ,Hope, with him but under her own maiden surname, Bugh. This suggests that she was born in Switzerland, where married women were known by their maiden surnames. Although he could have remarried to Anna Maria "Mary" Bugh in Germany and began his second cluster of children in Germany, starting with Jacob in about 1727. The date and circumstances of the birth of Katharina a.k.a. "Eva", shortly after the arrival of the ship Hope in 1733 suggests that his second wife, Mary Bugh, was with him on the ship, and expecting a child (Eva) during passage. Since Mary Bugh's two young children, Jacob and Barbara were not listed among the ship's passengers, in the list of children, there are two possibilities. The children's passenger list may have only included children emigrating without their mothers, or Mary Bugh left her two young children, Jacob and Barbara, with a close relative who would come with or send them over later.

    Brief Biography:

Joseph Flory* (1682-1741) was probably born in the Alpine Mountains in an area of Aedermannsdorf called Solterschwand, Switzerland; d. Oct., 1741, Lancaster County PA. Joseph's Flory family may be descended from a group of farmers known as Senns, who lived in remote alpine valleys which are only seasonally accessible by single high winding paths. Many Senns were being persecuted for their Anabaptist religion in Switzerland, and for awhile it seemed as if Germany was more tolerant to people of their faith. He probably married first in c1711, to a woman, probably named Catherina, in Switzerland. His first wife may have died in Europe after the birth of Johannes (John). Joseph probably remarried to Anna Maria "Mary" Bugh, age 21, who emigrated to America on the same ship as he. He emigrated to Philadelphia with a group of Germans from the Palitinate, perhaps sharing a common Anabaptist religious faith, on the ship Hope. He signed an oath of allegiance on Aug. 28, 1733.
