Johann Caspar Werner*; b. Feb. 3, 1809, Zeilbach, Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany; d. May 12, 1878, Eglon WV; buried in the Eglon Lutheran Cemetery.

Brief Biography:

Johann Caspar Werner* (1809-1878), son of Ludwig Werner* and Anna Katharina Diehl*. Johann Caspar, known as "Caspar" was born in the village of Zeilbach, Hesse Darmstadt, Germany and emigrated to the U.S. in 1834.

The records of his birth are recorded in the Lutheran Parish at Zeilbach. In attendance at his baptism at the Parish were two Godfathers; his uncle Johann Caspar Werner (after whom he was named), Ludwig's brother; and Johann Balthasar Diehl, Anna Katharina's brother. Caspar was educated as a miller, following his father and father-in-law in Zielbach. The reason for his emigration to Baltimore on the ship Virginia in 1834 are unknown, but it is known that the State of Hesse Darmstadt was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire at that time and the Emporer of Austria was conscripting many young men from Hesse Darmstadt to serve the Austrian war effort against the Russians in Turkey. Many young men in Hesse Darmstadt felt that they were "expendable" and sought to avoid the draft, in a seemingly hopeless war. It is also true that other members of the Werner and Diehl families in prior generations had emigrated to America, and so Caspar may have had cousins already in America.

After arriving in Baltimore on May 9, 1834, Caspar went quickly to Garrett County, on the extreme western border of Maryland, and bought land. Presumably, he sought to buy agricultural land at the lowest price available and pursue his trade as a miller. Apparently, he achieved some success as a farmer and miller. Some of his business records have been handed down in his family and show money billed, owed to him and received, for flour and other farm products from buyers in the area.

Caspar married Julith Shultz in 1835. She was then residing on her father's 1,000 acre farm near Grantsville, Garrett County MD. After their marriage, Caspar and Judith moved to Eglon VA (now WV), just a few miles west of Grantsville and raised a family of 10 children.

Caspar died of Pneumonia on May 12, 1878. He is buried in the Lutheran Cemetery at Eglon WV.
