Brief Biography
Howard Roscoe Driggs; was born on Aug 8, 1873, Pleasant Grove UT. Howard taught in the public schools in Pleasant Grove. Howard graduated from the School of Education at the University of Utah, and later became the Head of the English Dept. at the newly organized Branch Normal School in Cedar City, UT. He spent a year at Chicago University to prepare for a higher position at the University of Utah, where he taught for a number of years. After receiving a grant to further study English teaching in the United States (now known as a Sabattical Leave), in 1923, he was appointed Professor of English Education at New York University. When he retired from New York University in 1943, he was named Professor Emeritus.
Howard was the author of about 50 books on American Western History topics, mostly non-fiction, although some were "historical fiction" providing dramatizations of historical events for teaching young people. He also wrote Educational tracts.
He became the Founder and President of the Pioneer Trails Association, an Association devoted to the preservation, historical recognition, and dramatization of the importance of westward wagon trails and railroads.
Howard was also the author and organizer of a major 2-volume genealogical work on the Driggs Family in America, which now serves as one of the primary source documents on the Driggs family.
