Brief Biography:

Howard Luke Werner (1882-1954), son of Hampton Werner* (1848-1885) and Lucinda Miller* (1851-1939) was born in Eglon WV on Aug16,1882, and died in Culver IN, on Apr 6, 1954.

Howard attended Tri State College in Angola Indiana. There he met Lessie Elizabeth Taylor. Both were taking classes to become teachers. One of the first dates was spent rowing a boat across the lake - until it sprung a leak, and the boat barely made it back to the shore! Both finished the course and Howard taught school in West Virginia

Since teaching in West Virginia did not pay well, Howard studied at Polk's Conservatory of Piano Tuning in Valparaiso, Indiana, with the intention of becoming a piano tuner. Then he married Lessie Elizabeth Taylor on Oct 13, 1906, and after a short stay in Ft. Wayne IN, the moved to Montgomery, AL where Howard tuned pianos for a piano company or store.

This job in Alabama apparently also did not pay well, so Howard and Lessie moved to Lancaster PA where Howard went to Bowman's Technical School to study the trade of watchmaking. After completing the course of watchmaking he worked for a while in a jewelry store in Baltimore, MD before finding a better job in Morgantown, WV, where he again worked in a jewelry store. All but the youngest of their children were born in Morgantown.

Howard and Lessie saw an opportunity to purchase a watch and jewelry store in Culver IN, and they were encouraged by his father-in-law to take this step, because it was closer to Lessie's home. Ultimately, Howard purchased the jewelry store where they lived and worked until they died. See Werner family web pages.
