Brief Biography:

Horatio Knight "Ray" Bradford was born in Middletown CT. He moved with his family to Washington DC when he was 5 years old. He was educated at public elementary school there and graduated from Central High School before joining the Bureau of Plant Industry of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).

Ray was accepted for matriculation at the Maryland Agricultural College (now University of Maryland, College Park MD), and may have spent a few months there but chose to fit himself at the Army and Navy Preparatory School for Army Examinations.

Ray was highly recommended for service in the US Army by several well-placed authorities, including Senator Hawley, and in 1902 he received from President Theodore Roosevelt his commission as 2nd Lieutenant assigned to the 17th Infantry at Vancouver Barracks, Washington State. He was later transferred to the 26th Infantry for duty in the Philippines. In 1906 he was stationed at Fort McPherson GA, before serving in Cuba in 1907. He returned to Fort McPherson in 1908. On Apr. 23, 1909 he was promoted to 1st Lieutenant and was stationed at Ft. Brady MI.

In 1912 he was stationed in Texas on the Mexican border. In 1914 he was mis-diagnosed with "military tuberculosis", and sent to the Army Hospital at Fort Bayard NM. On May 4, 1914 he died of butendocarditis, discovered upon autopsy. Just before his death he had received orders to proceed to Ft. Leavenworth for examination for the rank of Captain.
