Henry Adams; b. Feb. 16, 1838, Boston MA; d. Mar. 27, 1918, in Wash. DC.
- m. Marian Hooper, on June 27, 1872, at Beverly Farms MA. She was b. Sep. 13, 1843, Boston MA; d. Dec. 6, 1885, Wash. DC. She is the daughter of Dr. Robert William Hooper and Ellen Sturgis.
- Henry and Ellen had no children.
Brief Biography:
Henry Adams (1838-1918), was born in Boston MA, and grad. Harvard College, A.B., 1858. After he spent two years traveling in Europe, he joined his parents in Wash. DC, then traveled with them to England where he remained 7 years as Secretary to his father while his father was Minister to the Court of St. James.
Henry Adams returned to the U.S. and was appointed an Assistant Prof. of History at Harvard College, 1870-1877, and editor of the North American Review. After 1877, he traveled extensively abroad and spent 30 years engaged in literary, biographical, and historical work. His most noted works are:
- Essays in Anglo Saxon Law, 1876.
- New England Federalism, 1877.
- Life of Albert Gallatin, 1880.
- Life of John Randolph, 1882
- History of the United States under the Administrations of Jefferson and Madison, in 9 volumes, 1888-1891.
- Mont St. Michel and Chartres.
- The Education of Henry Adams, an autobiographical work.
Henry Adams is considered an eminent historian and a distinguished man of letters. In 1892 he was awarded the honorary LL.D. from Western Reserve University.
