Brief Biography:
Elisha Paine* (1658-1735/6) and his wife first resided at Eastham MA, then moved to Barnstable and then back to Eastham. Finally they moved to Canterbury CT, where he died. In the Hopkins genealogy, he is assumed to have been also known as "Eliezer" and "Alisha".
Elisha's father, Thomas Paine* (the younger Thomas) died at Eastham MA on Aug. 16, 1706, as an "aged" man, according to the Hopkins genealogy. The younger Thomas, is thought to be the son of an elder Thomas Paine* who settled in Yarmouth MA in 1639. Evidently both the elder Thomas and his son, the younger Thomas, emigrated from England prior to 1639 when the younger Thomas was 10 years old. The younger Thomas lost the sight of one eye from an arrow. He was made a Freeman of the Plymouth Colony on June 1, 1658. He and Giles Hopkins served as surveyors of highways for Eastham in 1662. Thomas was also Treasurer, Clerk, and a Selectman of Eastham, and in 1671, the younger Thomas was named Water Bailiff of Plymouth Colony.
Thomas Paine* (the younger) was a cooper and builder of mills. In March of 1696 he bought a home in Boston and represented Eastham in the Massuchusetts General Court, until Oct. 13, 1997, when he sold his Boston home and moved back to Eastham.
Elisha's mother, Mary Snow* (c1630-1704) is the daughter of Nicholas Snow*. Nicholas arrived on the ship, Ann, in 1623. Mary's mother, Constance Hopkins*, came to Plymouth with her father, Stephen Hopkins*, on the ship, Mayflower, in 1620.
