  Brief Biography:

  Cornelius Vermeule* was a large landholder, and a member of the first legally elected Provincial Congress, Trenton, Oct. 3, 1775. He was elected a member of the Somerset County Committee of Observation, and an Elder of the Raritan (now Somerville) Dutch Reform Church.

  Cornelius Vermeule* had a large farm in Plainfield NJ, presumably part of the Blue Hills Plantation, where in 1777 he allowed George Washington's troops to erect a small fort or block house on a hill on his property where he could look out over a wide expanse of the countryside around. Washington often stayed at the Vermeule residence and they remained good friends until long after the war.
