Charles Francis Adams; b. Aug. 18, 1807, Boston MA; d. Nov. 21, 1886, in Boston MA
- m. Abigail Brown Brooks (1808-1889), on Sep. 5, 1829, at Medford MA. She is the youngest daughter of Peter Chardon Brooks and Nancy Gorham. Peter Chardon Brooks amassed a fortune as an insurer and capitalist in Boston and was regarded as one of the wealthiest men in New England. He was the son of Rev. Edward Brooks, who was son of Samuel Brooks, who was son of Capt. Samuel Brooks, who was son of Caleb Brooks, who was son of Capt. Thomas Brooks (c1613-1667) who arrived in New England in 1631 on the ship Susan & Ellen and settled first in Watertown MA, and later in Concord MA. Abigail's other ancestors include: Sir Richard Saltonstall (1586-1661), Rev. John Cotton (1584-1652), and the Hon. Nathaniel Gorham (1738-1796).

Brief Biography:
Charles Francis Adams (1807-1886); went with his parents to St. Petersburg, Russia, at an early age. He grad. Harvard College A.B., 1825; studied Law under Daniel Webster in Boston; was admitted to MA Bar in 1828, and practiced law in Boston, 1828-1831.
He was elected to the MA Legislature, 1831-1844; MA State Senator, 1845-6; was a member of the Whig Party but joined the Free-Soil Party, where he was a Vice Presidential candidate under Martin Van Buren as the presidential candidate. He was elected to the U.S. Congress from MA, in 1858 and 1860 when the Free-Soil Party merged with the newly established Republican Party. He was appointed by President Lincoln to serve as Minister to England, 1861-1868, and successfully preserved England's neutrality through the American Civil War. He was considered for nomination as a candidate for President of the U.S. in 1872 and 1876.
Charles Francis Adams spent his later years as an overseer to Harvard College, 1869-1881, and became an author of Adams biographical and historical works. He wrote The Life and Works of John Adams in 10 volumes and The Diary of John Quincy Adams in 12 volumes. He was awarded honorary degrees from Harvard and Yale.
