Brief Biography:

John William "Billy" Bradshaw, III (1921-1943) according to the Jeter Mosiac by Grata Jeter Clark p.92, is buried at Ardennes, American Cemetery, Neuville-en-Condros, Belgium. He had enrolled in Birmingham-Southern College when Pearl Harbor was attacked, and volunteering in the Army Air Corps; was trained as Navigator (B-17 "Flying Fortress"). In 1943, Bradshaw's squadron was enroute to Molesworth, England, when his plane, The Grapes of Wrath, developed problems in Trinidad. Forced to continue the perilous flight alone, Bradshaw and his crew finally arrived at their destination, only to experience their first combat mission without fighter protection. Over 50 holes in the plane could be counted as it returned, and the ill-fated missions would continue. On 15 May 1943, only three months after arrival, The Grapes of Wrath was shot down over the North Sea, and the crew was lost. John William Bradshaw was listed as Missing in Action for four months before his family received his Purple Heart and a memorial:

He stands in the Unbroken Line of Patriots Who have Dared to Die That Freedom Might Live.
And Grow.
And Increase its Blessings.
Freedom Lives.
And through it,
He Lives In a way That Humbles the Undertakings of Most Men.
Franklin D. Roosevelt
President of the United States of America
