Adrian Vermeule was born in Vlissingen, Zeeland, Holland and came to New Amsterdam with his cousin, the Rev. Guillaume Bertholf, only to visit, but was attracted to remain as the "Voorleser" or lecturer at the Dutch Reformed Church in Harlem, filling a vacancy left by John Tiebout. He moved to Bergen NJ, in about 1708, probably as a result of his marriage to Christina Cadmus, and assumed the Voorlesser position at the Bergen Dutch Reformed Church (Now in Jersey City NJ). He held this position for 27 years. Just before he died, he bought a large plantation for his sons in the Blue Hills, NJ (Now North Plainfield). His sons built the "Blue Hills Plantation", on which the Vermeule Mansion was built.
