Ascenath Church Dickman*; b. Dec. 28, 1796, Greenfield MA; d. July 26, 1840, Grafton VT. Ascenath is the daughter of Thomas Dickman* (1768-1841), the first Postmaster and notable printer in Greenfield MA, and Anne "Nancy" Church* (1769-1813).

Brief Biography:

Ascenath Church Dickman* (1796-1840) was widowed twice before she married Moses Bradstreet Bradford (1799-1878). Her first husband was Dr. Seth Washburn (1790-1825) whom she married on Apr. 4, 1818, and by whom she had 2 children, Ruth Washburn, and Thomas Washburn. Ruth attended Mt. Holyoke Seminary, married William Godell Bancroft of Grafton VT in 1849, moved with him to Charleston SC, where William and his brother set up a very successful dry goods store. Thomas Washburn studied medicine with his uncle in Greenfield, practiced medicine in Hillsboro IL, became surgeon of 126th IL Reg., and died in Hillsboro in 1893. ASCENATH's second husband was Dr. Simon Cooley Ewers (1797-1828), whom she married on Nov. 19, 1826, and who was a widower of her sister, Isabella U. Dickman. She had one child by Dr. Ewers, a daughter, Isabella Ewers, who lived in Grafton VT, died in 1850 at Wendell MA, and never married. Ascenath's third husband was Moses Bradstreet Bradford* (1799-1878), by whom she had 4 children:

Ascenath's father, Thomas Dickman* (1768-1841) was the son of William Dickman* (1718-1781) and Sarah Martin* who lived in the area of New Boston MA, near Worcester.

Thomas Dickman came to Greenfield from Worcester originally as the result of the efforts of William Coleman. Thomas became the first publisher of the Greenfield town newspaper The Impartial Intelligencer, and was the first to publish the first American architectural book: The Country Builder's Assistant, by Benjamin Asher in 1797.

The following item appeared in a record of Boston Selectmen: "At a Meeting of the Selectmen, July 4, 1769. Present, Henshaw, Jackson, Ruddock, Pemberton, Inches, Mason. Mr. William Dickman living at New Boston, informed the Selectmen that Elizabeth Lollier [?] has the Small Pox upon her at his house - knows not where she took it. Voted, that she be removed to the Hospital at New Boston. Mr. Dickman appeared, and ask'd liberty to send a Nurse to the Hospital free of Charge to the Town."

Ascenath's mother, Anne "Nancy" Church* (1769-1813) is the daughter of Moses Church* (b. 1735/6) and Anne Leonard*.

Joseph is directly descended from Richard Church* (1663-1730). Eliza is the daughter of Eliphalet Janes and Elfleda Lyon, and Eliphalet is the son of Irene Bradford and Jonathan Janes. Irene (or Irena) is the daughter of Lt. Joseph Bradford (1675-1747) and Anna Fitch (1675-1715). Joseph is the son of Maj. William Bradford* (1624/1703/4) and his second wife, Mary (Fitch) Wiswall (b. 1643).
