Brief Biography:
Aaron Cleaveland (III) (1715-1757), entered Harvard College in 1731 and graduated in 1735. He was a "large, stocky, and powerful man", skilled in many athletic endeavers, including skating swimming and wrestling, according to his grandson. While a student, he decisively won a fight with a bully that goaded him on.
Aaron (III) became a Minister, and was known as Reverend Aaron Cleveland. He served as Pastor at the Strict Congregational Church at Haddam CT, starting at about 1738.
Aaron's wife, Susanna Porter, was considered a rare beauty of her times and was described as a "belle of her time and some of the richest and most reputable men of the neighboring towns were suing for her hand, when she gave her heart to Aaron Cleveland, then a gay young collegian ..."
