You are more likely to be killed walking down the street and being hit by a bolt of lightning on a clear day than by a commercial airliner crash. Well , maybe not on a clear day but the point is made. This was true before September 11 and is true after September 11. The endless replaying of airliners crashing into the World Trade Center towers following the terrorist attack has burned into the American consciousness a psychological fear of flying.
This is most unfortunate because our economy is so dependent on the airline industry. There is no rational reason beyond the virtually limitless power of television and video to distort reality for the catastrophic downturn of the airline industry and hence, the entire U. S. economy. We must overcome this phobia despite the very real threat of further terrorist activity on the horizon.
