MAJOR Problem: Experienced Jun, 0017

Ordered 100MHz system on 12/11/95 with upgrade to Diamond Stealth 2201XL video and 512Kb sync pipeline burst cache, dropped the sound card. Was very explicit with the order and got everything in writing via fax, including brands and models of h/w and software included. Was told 7-10 business days delivery. Called 12/26 to check status and was told all orders of 12/11-12 were delayed due to shortage of parts. New arrival was 12/29. Called 12/29 and was told new arrival was 1/5 for all orders of 12/11. That's when I started talking with the sales manager, Mike. He was very pleasant and explained to me the shortage was in video cards, modems, and sound cards. I explained that I dropped the sound card and had a video card upgrade and they could ship me the modem after the fact. At that point he looked up my specific order and told me it had not yet shipped. Obviously it was not going arrived by the following friday via UPS. Then he dropped the bomb: the price of the video card was wrong and they could not supply it to me for the price accepted on the order. They were so backlogged from Christmas that they were now quoting $170 for cache upgrade (only supposed to cost $30 on my order). Finally, they were out of the MS Family Bundle and were substituting a Sun 20 pack or Cyberpack 3. Well, I was already getting the Sun 20 pack due to a Christmas sale special. We had major problems. Over the next 10 days I wasted a lot of time try to negotiate something. The best they could do for me after my order had been in place for a month was to credit me $20 for the lack of a MS Family Pack, I could get the 2201XL for an additional $69, and could get the original 512Kb cache if I would wait another 2 weeks for their backlog to clear out. I cancelled the order and asked for written confirmation via fax. I spent another 7 days trying to get them to provide a written confirmation. They ignored my phone calls and fax requests. Eventually I stopped trying and placed a call to my credit card company to ensure I had not been charged yet nor would be in the future. Bottom Line: They don't consider the price fixed until they ship. If I had ordered their standard configuration I think it all would have turned out positive. After scouring computer shopper for 9 months and building exhaustive price comparisons on up to 400 configurations, nobody can touch the 17", 5X CD system they offer. I just wish they could ship it!
