Virus Testing: testing your anti-virus program with a real virus is not generally a good idea.
For a better way to test your setup, most reputable anti-virus packages will now trigger an alert if
tested with file containing the following text:
X5O!P%@AP[4\PZX54(P^)7CC)7}$EICAR-STANDARD-ANTIVIRUS-TEST-FILE!$H+H*
and given a filename with a .com extension. (Example: virtest.com) Running the file displays the
text "EICAR-STANDARD-ANTIVIRUS-TEST-FILE!" Most people in the anti-virus community consider virus
simulators unnecessary and unsuitable for this task. [Thanks to the alt.comp.virus Mini-FAQ for this info.]

Spychecker, Marathon, Florida. Public database of
products known to have built-in spyware. Spyware is Advertising Supported software (Adware). It is a
way for shareware authors to make money from a product, other than by selling it to the users. Several
large media companies offer to place banner ads in software products in exchange for providing a portion
of the revenue from banner sales. These advertising companies usually install additional tracking software
on users systems, which is continuously "calling home", using the Internet connection to report statistical
data. According to privacy policies of the companies, there will be no sensitive or identifying data collected,
but having a "live" server sending information about a user's surfing habits to a remote location makes some
people nervous. Some adware does not include this kind of reporting. Those applications are not indexed in
the Spychecker database.
