KDFC: On The Air . . .

Dianne Nicolini  feedback@kdfc.tbo.com

KDFC is delighted to announce that Dianne Nicolini has joined our on-air staff.  Dianne is heard live from our studios on Market Street each weekday beginning with the Listener’s Choice Hour at 10:00 A.M. and continuing through 3:00 P.M.

"I think this is exactly what our audience has been hoping for," says Dianne about KDFC’s venture into live radio.

As host of the San Francisco Symphony’s radio broadcasts, Dianne’s voice is heard every Tuesday evening on KDFC, and on more than 500 additional stations nationwide.

Dianne grew up in Oakland and majored in theater at U.C. Berkeley, where she also enjoyed studying French.  She now lives in Oakland with her husband, a pediatrician, and their son and daughter.

"On classical radio, you have unique listeners," Dianne says.  "They are loyal, smart, and particular - the kind of people you’d like to meet at a party…In fact, I’m looking forward to the KDFC listener parties for just that reason!"

Tyler Phelps

Tyler Phelps says that sometimes he feels like a cross between the janitor and the station manager.  He has put the trash out, answered the phones, cleaned the heads on the tape machines, rebooted computers, fixed broadcast equipment, sent bills, and programmed and hosted radio shows.  He likes the variety of tasks his job offers, and notes that some broadcasters get stuck doing just one thing.  Not Tyler.  You might find him training a new intern, ordering office supplies, or listening to a CD he’s thinking about airing on one of his shows.

Tyler graduated from San Francisco State University in 1986, and he started working as an intern at KDFC three months later.  His first shift was Friday and Saturday nights from midnight until 6A.M.  Gradually he took on more responsibilities, including running the internship program he started out on.

Tyler has worked in KDFC’s offices on Market Street longer than anyone else.  "I’m the only one who knows what’s in all the closets," he says with a big smile.  And Tyler is the only person at KDFC who remembers the "old days" of reel-to-reel tapes, "so in a sense I feel like the last of the old-timers."  But Tyler adapts to new technology easily.  He learns machines quickly, and knows a lot about computers and equipment.  If something goes wrong with the phone system, Tyler can probably fix it.

Tyler programs and host "Premiere Performance", KDFC’s sampling of the best new CDs, heard from 8:00 P.M. - midnight on Sundays.  And because of his fondness for pipe organ music, he recently started "Diapason", which airs on the first and third Tuesday evenings of the month, from 10 - 11 P.M.. "Music is such a huge part of mu life," Tyler says.  "I’m here at KDFC eight hours a day listening to music constantly, and as soon as I get home, I turn on the radio or put on a CD."

Tyler is optimistic about the future of music, and with KDFC’s openness to new ideas, he plans to be broadcasting new, accessible music sometime soon.  "Something very exciting is on the verge of happening in classical music," he says.  We’re not sure what it is yet, but we know that KDFC will be right on the edge of it."
