RACE RESULTS:

This year’s River to Sea Relay team was lead by Tom Tarnow, now an experienced team captain, having also lead this year’s Jersey Shore Relay Team (Oregon’s overnight  “Hood to Coast Relay” next year?).   It turned out (as always) to be a very hot day, and, to top it off, they were one member short of the full 7-member team.  But this team was up to the challenge and finished with flying colors!

Captain Tarnow says his team deserves high praise for surviving the challenges of the day, while still managing to have a great time together.  After the race he made the following awards:

Robyn Fuchs: The Iron Chef Purple Heart award.   For preparing such a wonderful pre-race meal, and toughing out the end of her leg despite the screaming pain coming from the end of her leg.

Karen Thurston: The Runnin' Renegade award.  For not only breaking all the rules, but helping us make fun of them too.   I'll think twice before pinning a silly race number to the back of my shirt.

Andrea Talentino: The 'I Had What In My Pants?' award.  For arriving home to find a two-inch stick caught in the back of her running shorts.  Ouch.

Betty Fisher:
The Be Prepared / Golden Camel award.  For going above and beyond in the field of self sufficiency and taking care of the supersoaked needs of herself and of the team.

Tom Hand: The Eager Beaver / MVP award.  For rallying to the rescue despite record heat and the high mileage.  And for providing such quotes as "Nice going, Bubbles."  All while turning in some of the fastest times around.  To you I say a heartfelt "Nice going, Bubbles."

Richard (Robyn’s friend who drove the support vehicle):  The Mario Andretti Driver of the Year award; aka the I got myself into what? award. For trading away a perfectly good Saturday to put up with the heat of the summer sun, the grit and grime of the race, and all of our antics, I offer you my deepest thanks.

The team responded with a well-earned award for Tom: The King of the Hill award.  For both his great job on “The Beast” (reputably the hardest leg of the race), and for his superior leadership of the group.

As in the past, the day created a great opportunity for bonding, and an experience they won’t soon forget!
