Here's what's spinning now on my various multimedia players. To view previous capsule reviews, visit the archive.
John Eddie ~ Who the Hell is John Eddie |
His voice resembles Chris Isaak on the lead single, "Let Me Down Hard", however he travels his own path on the rest of the album. Classic lyric from "Forty", a tale of mid-life crisis, "But Bruce Springsteen's f*cking 53 and the Stones are almost dead."
Fountains of Wayne ~ Welcome Interstate Managers |
The pseudo concept album about middle management gets lost in the shuffle. What doesn't get lost, however, is great pop songwriting and sharp cynical lyrics.
Jabe ~ Drama City |
New England country/roots rocker produces his most satisfying release yet. Drama City is an apt title for an album of colorful characters.
Jon Auer/Ken Stringfellow ~ Private Sides |
The Posies have been more prolific since their break-up! Jon and Ken each contributed three tracks to this release without hearing one another's tracks. The results are minimalist power pop, heavy on melodic electric guitars.
Bis-Quits ~ The Bis-Quits |
Re-visiting the roots with this 1993 release featuring Will Kimbrough and Tommy Womack. "Tommy's on His Own" is an instant classic, as is Kimbrough's "Smell the Taste of Love".
Drive-By Truckers ~ Decoration Day |
Darker than their earlier releases, but no less powerful. The triple guitar attack and Southern rock style pack a punch.
Mike Errico ~ Skimming |
Much more electric than his previous releases, but still chock full of solid songwriting.
4 Way Street ~ Pre-release Album Sampler |
The four singer-songwriters who make up each bring their distinctive styles -- ranging from Philly soul to Dylan-esque ballads-- to the group. Looking forward to the full release.
