Oxford, OH:  Our local Audubon counted all Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday. However,
we did the counts in a different manner each night, so I'll list it all and
let you use it scientifically however you may, if you can.
Weather all four evenings was clear and in the 70s. The first bird went in
at 8:15 pm and the last made its rounds and dove back in at 8:30 pm Eastern
Daylight Savings time.
I located 3 active roosts here in this little old town of Oxford Ohio, home
of Miami University. There are more roosts which are active at different
times. ALL the roosts are in buildings still being used, but with old,
unused chimneys.
When there were multiple counters, we averaged the numbers:

Friday September 5 roost #1-70 Chimney Swifts (5 counters) Uptown Oxford 1/2
block off High Street in the alley between Park Place and Poplar Street
Saturday September 6 roost #2 - 225 (6 counters) Old Post Office which is now
Courthouse in uptown Oxford

Sunday September 7 roost #1- 95(1 counter), roost #2 - 236(1 counter), roost
#3- 600(1 counter) Physical Facilities Plant at the old Sawyer Gym on
Western Campus of Miami University
Monday September 8 roost #3 - 1, 160(3 counters)

The Grove Arcade is an old, 4 story, restored commercial building [circa 1926]. Chimney was square with an wood façade. It was partly cloudy, clearing after heavy rains. Temp 68.

Charlotte, NC:  Observed 1000+ chimney swifts between 7:20 and 7:40 p.m. EST . They slowly entered a chimney in an old, but renovated building less than a mile from the center of downtown. This was on Sept. 29. I watched again this evening, the 30th. There were less, 500 to 600. They used the same chimney. The weather both days was clear, mid 70's for high - mid 40's for low.

I plan to check the roosts every couple evenings just to see how long they stick around. But a question I have is- how do we know that the flock hasn't been replaced with another from day to day? Maybe roost #2 only accommodates 225-236 birds comfortably...…

Anyway, I've always had a fascination with these beautiful little birds and I thank you for your efforts.

Memphis, TN: This evening a friend, Carolyn Bullock, and I went to a site located near the Shelby County jail. There is a chimney which is approximately 125 feet high located on the jail property. We counted c 3322 Chimney Swifts entering the smoke stack. We also counted 3 very polite security  guards who were most curious about what we were doing. There are definitely advantages to being little old ladies in tennis shoes, since they all just drove off shaking their heads.

Alton, Il:  Just wanted to let you know that the swifts are still here in Alton Illinois, just across the river from St. Louis. Saw two very large flocks today downtown heading into communal chimneys. The weather has been anything but swift friendly...highs in the 50s and have had frost two of the last three nights. They were roosting much earlier in the day than they normally do around here in the summer time...still plenty of daylight though it was cloudy.

Thomson, GA:  Counted on all three nights, 5-7 September, 50 swifts, in Thomson, Georgia.  Clear skies, and all were entering a house chimney at dusk.

We are still observing this group although the numbers have decreased slightly, approx. 30 last night, entering the same house/residence chimney.  What a beautiful sight at the end of the setting sun!

Charleston, WV:  Here is a late swift observation that did not turn out as I expected. As you may remember, I received the 2003 Swift Night Out information after your scheduled Labor Day event.
I used to work near this location and would watch the chimney swifts. I haven't worked there in over a year and things had changed in reference to chimney swifts.
Observation:
Sunday, October 5, from 6:45 to 7:30 pm.
"5 Corners" of Kanawha County, Charleston, WV, an inner-city location about 6 blocks from Interstate 64, in the 600 block of Virginia Street, West
50-60 swifts circled a large brick chimney attached to a commercial building.  We watched and waited for them to go into the chimney as they had in the past.   Gradually there were less swifts and then there were none. So, they did not roost in the chimney, and I don't where they went to roost.   This is not what I expected to report and probably not what you expected to receive. I'll put a reminder to look in mid-August and will hope for better results.

Benton Harbor, MI:  While birding at Sarett Audubon Nature Center in Benton Harbor, MI on
10-11-03 spotted a single Chimney Swift. Is it usual that they fly singly
& quite high, & this late?

Romeo, MI:   I have been watching and counting these birds since I first noticed them over ten years ago. They are using an old three story building in downtown Romeo, Michigan. It is currently used for the Romeo Community Schools Administrative offices. In fact, it used to be the elementary school. The address is 316 North Main St. On September 5, 2003, my count was 225 birds. The first bird entered at approximately 8:15 with the last few stragglers going in after 9:00 (EST). I do not remember the exact weather conditions, but I know it was warm and that it was not raining.
