Frontispiece to Miriam's Schooling by Walter Crane
The quotation means: "Nothing other than having well dared to despise vanity." There is some confusion about the origin of the picture. In the Introduction, Reuben Shapcott states that the engraving is by Walter Crane. However the picture is clearly signed by W. Leverett. Leverett was Walter Crane's wood engraver.
Thanks to Charles Swann and William Peterson for help with this.
