| The jazz trio of Larry Bluth (piano),
Don Messina
(bass), and Bill Chattin (drums) has been playing and
performing
together since 1982.
The musicians of this group have studied and have been involved with the music and teachings of jazz greats Lennie Tristano and Sal Mosca for more than three decades. Collectively they have participated in jazz festivals, recorded on records/compact discs and performed in Mid-Atlantic/New England area clubs, colleges, libraries, museums and art centers. Their music and teaching have been influenced by players who are true to the art of improvisation. They strive to create beautiful music "in the moment" that swings. The trio's improvisations are structured over songs of the classic American songbook, compositions by jazz composers (Charlie Parker, Lennie Tristano, Warne Marsh, Lee Konitz, Billie Holiday, Lester Young, and Bud Powell), as well as compositions by the members of the group. Tunes are created spontaneously relying on the intuition of the trio (that has been together for over twenty years); introductions and endings are also invented as the tune evolves. Bill Chattin and Don Messina have accompanied and recorded with Sal Mosca (2 CDs - Thing ah Majig - Zinnia Records, and You go to my head - Blue Jack Jazz), Jimmy Halperin CYCLE LOGICAL), Ted Brown, Jon Easton ( Cadence Jazz 1175 and Blue Jack Jazz - 2008 release), Rick Moore, Chris Aiello (2008 Blue jack jazz CD), as well as performed with Judy Neimack, Lee Konitz, Dick Katz, Tardo Hammer, Stanley Turrentine, Phil Woods, Peter Prisco, Bob Arthurs, and Connie Crothers. The BMC Trio is recorded on three CDs. "Formations" (114CD), "Five Concerts and a Landscape" (109CD) and "Live at Orfeo" (105CD) are on Zinnia Records of Stamford, CT, USA. All are live recordings. A fourth CD is finished and waiting to be released. "Formations," the most recent (5/99) was recorded at Sette MoMA, a jazz club located in New York's Museum of Modern Art. Dr. Herb Wong of the IAJE and Bob Blumenthal of the Boston Globe have selected this CD as one 1999's best. "Live at Orfeo" was selected as the Critic's Choice Jazz CD for 1994/95 by New Review of Records and Soundview magazines; it was given three and one-half stars from the Penguin Guide to Jazz. "Five Concerts and a Landscape," released in 1997, was given Four Stars from Chris Albertson in Stereo Review as well as wonderful reviews in Wired, Cadence, Jazz Times, Ottawa Citizen, Boston Phoenix, Jazz Now and many more. It was selected by Dr. Herb Wong as one of his favorite piano trios in the March 1998 issue of the IAJE Journal. This trio was the featured subject on five radio shows each broadcasting for two hours. Dan Morganstern and Vincent Pelote featured them on Rutgers University¹s Institute of Jazz Studies show, "Jazz From the Archives," twice. This show aired on WBGO-FM (Newark, NJ). The ConcertZender of The Netherlands featured their CDs, and radio station KDSU (University of North Dakota) did a two hour show on the music of Lennie Tristano and that of Bluth, Messina, Chattin. Most recently KSMU (Utah) featured all three CDs by Bluth, Messina, Chattin Trio. "The triangle of Bluth, Messina, and Chattin is rare excitement." - Dr. Herb Wong, IAJE. During the past few years, the trio has performed at:
