I have Chimney Swifts in my family room fireplace chimney.  They return every summer. They nest and fledge young every year. Currently there is alot of chattering going on.  On 8/12/06 I counted 8 entering at 8:45PM EST. The temp was about 70 degrees and the wind was about 13 mph. Location is in Hunt Club Development, Solon, OH (SE of Cleveland).

Pat Hayes counted the number of swifts flying around his house around 8 pm on August 12. Number is 10. The weather was clear, sunny, slight wind. This is in a neighborhood of century old homes, but most have caps or screens on their chimneys, at Kelleys Island, Ohio. Kelleys Island is an island in the middle of Lake Erie about 8 miles from Cedar Point Amusement Park, which is 60 miles west of Cleveland, 50 miles east of Toledo.

I was bringing my son to first day of school today and noticed a few swifts flying in the air. I watched in awe as I saw likely 30-50 swifts exit the school's unused chimney, an awesome sight to say the least. The school is Elmwood Elementary in Naperville, Illinois. I am a normal spotter of these birds as a chimney sweep and report interesting findings to your website.

  • Broad description of the site, e.g. school, warehouse, residence, Chimney Swift Tower, etc. -- large, brick chimney

This is the second year in a row the swifts were a no show. This year I didn't observe any at all, let alone any going down the chimney. I will try again in September, but after two busts last year, I suspect the swifts have abandoned this chimney, that I once counted something in excess of 1,000 going down.

I wanted to write and let you know that we discovered approximately 200 swifts living in our neighbor's chimney this summer. We look forward to dusk every day. We sit out and watch them go to bed each evening.  When researching them, I read that they are not as plentiful here in the states due to chimneys being made differently now. I thought that if that were true, you might be interested in our swifts.
