And I thought Saulte Saint-Marie was fun....
1. The trip Up:
Liz and I flew out of Philly, to Milwaukee, and then on to Escanaba.
The trip to Escanaba was interesting....a twin-prop, in the snow
and blowing Michigan winds....I like roller-coasters, but not
while I'm thousands of feet in the air. We finally landed and
we made our way to the Casino about 5 PM...we managed to get rooms
there, and that was a good thing. We met up with the rest of the
Cyberfunking Team and prepared for the 8 PM Friday show. It was
great seeing old friends again and meeting new ones.
2. The Show:
The venue was small (750), and sold out. Tim the sound guy said the bass was heavy down front and he wasn't kidding. From the first note, I knew that this would be something special. Mel's bass was pounding in my chest like a wart hog on steroids trying to bang its way through a brick wall. Liz just looked at me and smiled. The sound was right on: strong, clear and intense...just the way I like it. The set was similar to other shows. Sky High sounded much more intense and very much tighter than in Portland. During the Star-Spangled banner, I broke into tears, and as Mel would tell me Saturday night, he was also holding back the tears. Bruce is a Guitar God. The entire audience was rocking...once they finally got into it. Don was amazing as usual, and if I could bottle his energy and sell it, I'd be a friggin' rich guy. Tim's keyboards were very much prominent tonight. Tim is a true gentleman and a musical talent, as all these guys are.
3. After The Show:
After the show we assembled in the buffet area of the restaurant
and the guys came out for the meet and greet. After the show,
a group of us went to the Casino bar to party and listen to the
house band worship Mel, the God of Thunder, who was there with
us. Did I have a good time? Yes, I did....but Saturday night was
yet to come.
4. Saturday: One Night Two Shows:
Both shows Saturday night were somewhat abbreviated at 1 hour and 15 minutes each. A few songs were dropped due to the back-to-back shows. After the first show, it was time for those donning Halloween costumes to go up and suit-up. The shows by the way were fantastic, just like Friday night. I went up to the room and put on a modified SuperMan costume...and became..."JagerMan". As I came down and walked through the Casino to numerous stares, I could see other crazy Cyberfunkers who also were ready to rock: JR as The American Man, Dana as the cheap whore, Stan as the blue guy, The Hippie, Dena S. the Dominatrix, Lorie the Bay City Roller, Ralph the Dominator, Wanda Oooo..La..La, and others. The second show was awesome, front row seats and this crowd was really into it. Bruce is starting to improvise on ISLO and it sounds great. After the show we had a meet and greet, and the Jager started flowing, in fact, I believe we emptied the dispenser in the Casino bar and they had to replenish. Afterwards, we hit the bar and Mel was coaxed up on stage to do SKOW with the Casino band...what a night!!! As we end this year of Funk concerts, I'd like to thank Don, Sunny, Mel, Dena, Max, Bruce and Tim for all the great times and memories...I'll never forget them, or you guys. Thanks also to DJ and Tim for all the behind the scenes stuff, and a special thanks to all the great people Liz and I have met along the way including JD White, Ralph and Wanda, Stan and Tia, JR and Lynn, Dana & Cindy, Alabama George, Lorie, Celinda and Mike, Craig and Nancy and many, many others who I have named in other reviews. Jagerman loves all of you....now do a shot for me.
