Math and Multi-age

It is important to learn as much about our students as we can. We want to purposefully collect this information to meet the individual student needs in the multi-age classroom. This can be done by using meaningful mathematics tasks with self-directed explorations. Rich and engaging group math tasks can teach kids that mathematics will be both challenging and intellectually stimulating. Help students recognize the value of manipulatives as mathematical models or tools. Process experiences in a way that helps kids learn to work effectively together. Use these tasks to observe and assess students' mathematical understandings and dispositions.

Fraction Circles

Fraction circles best fit the needs of the younger students. Using a familiar shape and relating it to a pizza is sometimes more developmentally appropriate than using fraction bars.

Egg Cartons

I use egg carton fractions for cooperative group problem solving activities.
